That's exactly what happened on November 8, 2025, when the enigmatic interstellar object 3I/ATLAS put on a spectacular show after reaching its closest point to the Sun (perihelion). But here's where it gets fascinating: this wasn't your average comet tail. Observers M. Jäger, G. Rhemann, and E. Prosperi, using specialized filters and long-exposure techniques, captured a complex jet structure erupting from 3I/ATLAS, visible even from 29 degrees away from the Sun's glare.
Their images, stacked from 24 green-filtered exposures (35 seconds each), along with red and blue filter shots, revealed a massive coma stretching half a million kilometers—that's roughly the distance between Earth and the Moon! And this is the part most people miss: five distinct jets were visible, including a surprising anti-tail pointing toward the Sun, a feature that challenges our understanding of how comets behave.
