Nickelodeon Acquires ‘The Marsupilamis’ – Fresh Take on Kids Brand (2025)

Nickelodeon, a leading children's entertainment brand, has made a bold move by securing the global rights to the CGI animated series The Marsupilamis, a fresh take on the beloved classic character created over 70 years ago by Belgian author André Franquin. This acquisition marks a significant expansion of Nickelodeon's international reach, bringing the iconic Marsupilami—originally a wild creature from the Palombian jungle—to the heart of urban life. The series, set to debut in 2026, promises to reinvigorate the legacy of this cherished character while introducing new adventures for young audiences.

This fresh interpretation of the Marsupilami, which has captivated generations, blends humor, heart, and action into a story centered on twins Jade and Mica, who discover three mysterious eggs from their explorer parents. Once hatched, the siblings must outwit predators and keep their newfound friends hidden, as the world outside their city remains a mystery. Directed by Célestine Jacquel-Plays (known for Grizzy and the Lemmings), the series features a stellar cast including Andrew Barnett Jones and Ciaran Murtagh (who also helmed The Amazing World of Gumball) as co-writers. Guilhem Deckers, artistic director of Minions 2, will oversee the creative vision.

Nickelodeon’s senior vp, Layla Lewis, emphasized the significance of this partnership: “This fresh take on a beloved character brings a vibrant mix of humor, heart, and adventure, ensuring The Marsupilamis becomes a standout addition to our lineup.” Meanwhile, Média-Participations’ head of audiovisual & innovation, Caroline Duvochel, highlighted the strategic value of the acquisition: “Our team’s collaboration with Ellipse Animation and Paramount’s global reach ensures The Marsupilamis becomes a cultural touchstone, uniting our creative efforts under one banner.”

But here’s where it gets controversial: While many celebrate the series as a modern reboot of a timeless classic, others argue that the Marsupilami’s original mystique—rooted in its jungle origins—may be diluted by the urban setting. As the series prepares to launch, fans will debate whether the shift from wilderness to city life preserves the character’s essence or transforms it into a new kind of fantasy. What do you think? Will the Marsupilami’s charm endure in this new iteration, or will it risk losing its roots in the process?
