The Mystery of the Martian Sky: Unveiling the Truth Behind the Cylindrical Object
In a thrilling development, NASA's Perseverance rover has captured an extraordinary sight - a cylindrical object soaring through the skies of Mars. This intriguing phenomenon has sparked a wave of speculation and curiosity, leaving scientists and enthusiasts alike eager for answers.

Coincidentally, the photo's date aligns with 3I/ATLAS's closest approach to Mars. In the absence of NASA's confirmation, Loeb took to his blog to offer an interpretation. He estimated that the cylindrical shape, approximately 31,000 miles long, could be attributed to the comet's elongated appearance due to the camera's long integration time.
Loeb's calculations suggest that 3I/ATLAS, while impressive, is not of such colossal size. Instead, the comet's appearance in the image is a result of the camera's exposure settings. He explains, "The stripe in the Navcam image is a product of stacking hundreds of images over a ten-minute interval. An individual snapshot, with a maximum exposure of 3.28 seconds, would show 3I/ATLAS as a circular spot."
However, if the Navcam images are indeed single snapshots with exposure times below 3.28 seconds, Loeb posits that the observed source might be much closer to the camera, capable of appearing elongated due to its proximity and speed.
The mystery deepens as we await further confirmation. NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter also captured an image of the comet, but the release of this data is pending. In the meantime, the interstellar visitor has been captured by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) at Gemini South in Chile.
